So Tuesday is my regular Pub Poker night, one of the joys of living in the middle of no where is that going to the Casino mid week just does not really work so I continue to play Pub Poker.
The Tuesday game is full of interesting characters from the traditionally tight older players down to the crazy aggressive young players. The real question is where do I fit into this graph. Well I qualify as one of the older players, I think of the main regular players I would be the third oldest, so clearly should be on the tight end of the scale.
Well I think everyone’s view of me is that I am one of the most aggressive players there (in playing style as opposed to physicality of course). This is image is definitely true in the early stages of the game as it is a £5 rebuy for the first 3 20 minute levels, with an optional add-on of £5 at the first break. Therefore I am happy to gamble at start to build a big stack and then slow down once the rebuy period has ended.
So this Tuesday I look down at my first hand and it is 10/8 and we have an all in! from a player in front of me so I decided to have a quick spin. It did not work out for me (they had AK, not sure why they felt a need to go all in!) so a quick rebuy and we got going again. I managed to win a few hands and started to chip up nicely.
The next hand of interest did not involve me but did include the AK player, the board showed 10/2/5 and we again had two people all in, the AK guy had 10/10 for top set against A4 for an unlikely gutshot. The two all in players are friends and have a lot of history so generally everyone was laughing at the all in by the A4 and taking the mick, I said to the other player well you don’t want to see a 3, of course the next turn was a 3!!!. So to even it up I said pair the board and clearly being able to control the cards the 2 arrived on the river. Now if only I could call them in for my self.
Unfortunately I could not and despite making the final table I went out in 7th. Which of course meant time to join the cash table. Now while I consider myself a tournament player I do enjoy playing cash especially in the pub. The game is 10p/20p blinds however, most pots are raised pre to at least a £1. We had visit on this day from American Mark (a regular player of the game in the past when on secondment to the UK) who was back for week for work. It was getting late and he announced as the cards were being dealt that he was going to bluff us all off the next pot as it was time to go. So I look down at 22 and wait to see what happens.
The second player to act say all in blind, the next player went all in as well before American Mark acted, the two of us were in fits of laughter and two all ins after his statement, and then he folded as quite hard to bluff at this point. I had both of the players well covered and decided to call and manged to hit a set to take the pot down.
Two hands later American Mark jammed a flop and I had 44 (put had missed the flop) and called pointing out he had told us all he was going to bluff, he was and I took down a nice pot.
So at the end of the night I had lost a bit in the tournament and made a very nice profit in the cash to make an enjoyable evening.
The next game is on Saturday at the BCPC deepstack.
